#7 Sister Ripley VS #15 Sister Grimm

Welcome back for the third match up of the Crazy 8. It’s a saucy Sister vs Sister pairing kind of like Venus vs Serena but not at all. Because this is a match up that could have only happened in the VS 2pcg universe!

Sister Ripley Deck VS. Sister Grimm Deck

Enough with the small talk lets get this report rolling. I was the pilot for Sister Grimm and chose to be on the play after winning the die roll. I was very curious to see what Kirk would do in this match up with Sister Ripley. The deck was built to just start stunning the opposing main character from turn one on. With Sister Grimm‘s low attack and high defense of five, I would not be able to just suicide my main character into his to keep him from leveling. And at the same time, would it be better for Kirk to wait on his attacks or just go after his experience right away and start trying to stack up the wounds on Sister Grimm with no regard to my own leveling. It can be tricky to figure out when it is best to stun Sister Grimm and when it isn’t. I feel like Sister Ripley will just have to put the pedal to the metal and Kirk would just have to figure out how to deal with her Super Powers as he anticipated how I was going to choose to use them.

Game 1, Turn 1: I used my mulligan with nothing lower than a five drop in hand and landed a She-Hulk in my next seven. I laid a Fortress and passed.

Kirk laid a Weylan-Yutani Complex and had Sister Ripley attack into Sister Grimm. I didn’t have an tricks so Sister Ripley gained an experience and Kirk ended his turn after.

Turn 2: I laid a second copy of Fortress into my resource row and then ended my turn.

Kirk laid and Earth into his resource row and recruited Call to his front row. He activated Your A** is Already on the Line in order to give each of his two front row characters a +1+1 counter. Then Call and Sister Ripley were sent on a team attack into Sister Grimm gaining Sister Ripley one more experience. I had no tricks and took the one way stun and added a wound to my MC. After that Kirk ended his turn.

Turn 3: I laid a card face down for my third resource and recruited Singularity to my front row. I chose to have my level two Sister Grimm attack Call before I used one of her Super Powers and got the one way stun. Next I activated Sister Grimm to give Singularity a Caffeine Injection which put four +1+1 counters on her. I then had Singularity attack Sister Ripley. Kirk had no tricks and took the one way stun gaining a wound. Lastly I sent Sister Grimm to the Pocket Dimension at end of my turn.

Kirk added a Laboratory as his third resource and recruited Parker to his front row. Parker gave Singularity a little taste of his Cattle Prod. She lost her counters along with being pushed to the back row.

Now Kirk chose to have the entire team attack Sister Grim for a total of eight. I played Shock to the System targeting Sister Ripley for -3 attack but Kirk had a power up for Parker to get his total attack back up to six and got the knockout on Singularity.

I struck back on Call giving her a second wound and then Kirk ended his turn.

Turn 4: I added another face down card to my resource row, recruited She-Hulk and had her go to the front row. I really wanted to get Parker off the table and with his +1+1 counter I didn’t want to risk losing the KO by just attacking with She-Hulk alone. Sister Grimm and She-Hulk teamed up to get the knockout on Parker without consequence. After that I ended my turn.

Kirk laid an Academy and attached a Power Loader onto Sister Ripley. Then he recruited Iceman, who would Freeze my She-Hulk.

Next Kirk had Iceman move to the front row and Call went to the back row. He sent Iceman into She-Hulk to gain his fourth experience but Iceman would be knocked out in the process. Finally he had Sister Ripley attack Sister Grimm and got his fifth experience to level up.

I didn’t have anything that would put my Sister’s defense to eleven so I just took the stun and leveled up. With two wounds on Sister Grimm and one on Sister Ripley Kirk ended his turn.

Turn 5: I added a Fortress to my resource row. Then recruited Miss America who went to the front row. She-Hulk was frozen and I should have moved her to the back row looking back on it. I really wanted to try and get rid of the Power Loader this attack and sent both Miss America and Sister Grimm into Kirk’s MC. I activated Baroness of Arcadia to bring my attack to whopping total of 13. Unfortunately for me, Kirk had a Shock to the System to break it up.

Kirk chose to stun my Sister Grimm to add a third wound and I ended my turn. I was obviously in need of some different resources and I’d need to draw them soon if I was going to turn this game around.

On Kirk’s fifth turn he laid an Avenger’s Mansion and recruited both Iceman and Black Panther. Iceman would Freeze She-Hulk for another turn and went to the back row while Black Panther went to the front. During his main phase Kirk added a +1+1 counter to Sister Ripley and Black Panther with Your A** is Already on the Line. Then he had Sister Ripley attack She-Hulk for a stun. Next he had Black Panther attack Miss America, Ferocious made this a no contest and got the one way stun here as well. I chose to keep Miss America face down instead of using her Tough ability and Kirk ended his turn. The picture below shows Miss America and Sister Grimm as ready but we almost forgot to take a picture and Kirk took a quick pic before I got too far ahead of the turn.

Turn 6: I finally drew a different resource and happily placed my Arcadia into my resource row. Loki was my new recruit and went to the front row. This time I left She-Hulk in front on purpose as a blocker and hid Sister Grimm in the back row.

I then used Bounce House to make Kirk put Black Panther into his hand. This allowed me to attack without fear of Think Again and it pushed the board state closer to my favor again. Next I discarded a copy of She-Hulk to power up and draw three cards from Power Hungry. Loki and Miss America made a team attack on Sister Ripley for a total of 13 once again. I got the stun and Power Loader was sent to discard pile while Ripley gained her second wound. Kirk chose to strike back on Loki making her appearance short and sweet.

I then had Sister Grimm make a ranged attack on Call and got the KO. I ended my turn pretty satisfied with a full grip of cards and some nice blockers to keep Sister Grimm safe and sound.

Kirk added another Academy to his resources and recruited Black Panther to the front row. Kirk then added a +1+1 counter to his only two front row characters with Your A** is Already on the Line and went into his attacks. Black Panther went after Miss America and I let her get stunned but didn’t turn her back up with Tough. Next Kirk had Sister Ripley attack She-Hulk. I gave Sister Ripley a Shock to the System and the combatants bounced off each other without anyone getting stunned. That was the end of Kirk’s turn.

Turn 7: I added a Laboratory as my seventh resource. Ghost Rider was my new recruit and he gave his Penance Stare to Black Panther for three -1-1 counters which was enough for the stun. This would allow me to avoid Think Again once again. From the front row, Ghost Rider attacked Sister Ripley. This is when Kirk went into the tank and we talked a bit about which threat was worse Thanos or Ghost Rider at this point. Kirk decided to use Sacrifice and Resurrection canceling my attack. This would place Ripley 8 level two into Kirk’s back row face down as his new main character. Kirk lost out on a couple of wounds but my deck was surging back hard and Kirk was not keeping up with the drops I was making on curve. I then had Sister Grimm attack Iceman for the KO and ended my turn.

Kirk chose not to lay a resource and didn’t have anyone to recruit either. He then discarded an Earth to use I’m Sorry on Ghost Rider. I’m at a loss trying to remember why Kirk didn’t just put the Earth into his resource row knowing he was going to use it to activate Ripley 8’s one time level two Super Power.

Kirk now had knowledge of my vast hand and things just couldn’t have looked good on his side of the table. But Sister Ripley never gives up, right? So she attacked Miss America and I responded with Find Cover to keep Miss America face up this attack. Next Black Panther was powered up and sent in to attack Miss America for the third straight turn in a row and finally got the KO. Kirk then activated Acid Blood by discarding a copy of The Nostromo to give both Sister Ripley and She-Hulk six -1-1 counters. This resulted in She-Hulk being knocked out. If only Kirk could have drawn Dr. Strange, this turn would have been much better. The six -1-1 counters on Ripley 8 would have been Transmuted into six +1+1 counters which would have put her out of stun range from Thanos_SC.

Turn 8: I was back down to just my main character but I had Pixie and Singularity in hand, along with Loki and Thanos. I decided the combo was the way to go after adding an Arcadia to my resources. Singularity and Pixie both went to the front row with Sister Grimm still hiding in the back row. I activated Pixie’s Hallucinogenic Dust, which found Miss America. Next I had Sister Grimm make a ranged attack on Ripley 8 and got the stun for a wound. After that I didn’t feel the need to risk any more attacks into a Ferocious Black Panther with four attack, so I passed sending my whole squad to the Pocket Dimension at the end of my turn.

Kirk added an Avenger’s Mansion to his resources and his darn deck was still throwing up bricks as far as supporting characters or equipment went. All he could do this turn was send Ripley 8 to his back row behind Black Panther and end his turn.

Turn 9: I had another Fortress to resource and felt it was time to drop Thanos as my recruit. With Sister Grimm being the only character in the back row I activated Pixie to find a copy of She-Hulk with Hallucinogenic Dust.

I sent a team attack of She-Hulk and Miss America into Black Panther but Kirk made me Think Again. I then sent a team attack of Pixie and Singularity into Black Panther while activating Baroness of Arcadia to give both my characters +2+2 this attack. Kirk made me Think Again, again. I had one more good attack left and sent Thanos into Black Panther and finally got the knockout. I sent my whole squad to the Pocket Dimension at the end of my turn.

Kirk’s ninth turn was not going to be enough to over come his missed drops and he scooped up determined to rally back in game two.

Game 2, Turn 1: Kirk chose to be on the play this game and we both kept our opening hands. Kirk laid an Academy as his first resource and went to his main phase with no recruits. He sent Sister Ripley into Sister Grimm to bounce and gain an experience.

I also laid an Academy but passed the turn without recruiting a supporting character or attacking.

Turn 2: Weylan-Yutani Complex joined Kirk’s resources and he recruited Black Panther. Kirk added a +1+1 counter to his two front row characters and sent Sister Ripley into Sister Grimm gaining an experience along the way. I had a copy of You Won’t Like Her When she is Angry to put two +1+1 counters on my MC for another bounced attack. With Sister Grimm being too large to attack into any more, Kirk ended his turn.

I added a Laboratory to my resources and didn’t have a supporting character I wanted to recruit yet. I had Sister Grim move to the front row forgetting Kirk was not playing with M41A Pulse rifle. Then I had Sister Grimm attack Black Panther and got the stun. After that I ended my turn.

Turn 3: Academy number two joined Kirk’s resources and Kane entered his front row. Explore found Kirk a Laboratory which went into his hand. Next Kirk had Iceman enter the front row and his Freeze was targeted at Sister Grimm. Kirk activated Your A** is Already on the Line to put another +1+1 counter on Black Panther and Sister Ripley. His first attack was to send Iceman into Sister Grim to gain his third experience but his Iceman was knocked out in the process. Next he had Black Panther attack Sister Grimm and powered up. The combat didn’t result in a stun on either character but Kirk just wanted the fourth experience. Finally Kirk had Kane and Sister Ripley team attack into Sister Grim, this would gain the fifth experience his MC needed to level up. I didn’t have a trick so I just chose to strike back at Kane for the knockout. Sister Grimm was stunned and gained a wound. But she also leveled up and Kirk’s turn was ended.

On my third turn I added a Laboratory to my resources and recruited Singularity to my front row. Sister Grimm was sent to the back row again to make a ranged attack on Black Panther before I used one of her super powers. Kirk used Shock to the System to keep his Black Panther from being stunned. I turned my Academy face down to activate Open Sesame and drew three cards before I ended my turn.

Turn 4: Academy number three entered the resource row for Kirk. Sister Ripley got into her Power Loader and added another +1+1 counter to herself and Black Panther. Man, was this never ending run of Intellect going to stop? Ripley was now a 13/15 and easily knocked Singularity out of the game. Black Panther then took his turn attacking Sister Grimm but I had her Find Cover to survive the Ferocious attack.

Kirk passed after that and I laid my third copy of Laboratory. I recruited She-Hulk to the front row and had her just chill as a blocker.

Turn 5: Avenger’s Mansion entered Kirk’s resource row. Iceman was the lone recruit, he targeted She-Hulk with Freeze and entered the back row. Black Panther was sent to attack She-Hulk as a Ferocious 6/5. I played Find Cover to give my defender three more defense and make her a 5/8. Kirk powered up Black Panther to make him a 7/6 to avoid the strike back stun. I discarded a copy of She-Hulk to power up and got the defensive stun which was enough to knock Black Panther out of the game.

Sister Ripley then attacked She-Hulk and got the stun ending Kirk’s turn.

I laid an Academy into my resource row and recruited Miss America. She and Sister Grimm went to the front row and She-Hulk took a turn off in the back row to thaw out. I had Miss America fly over Sister Ripley to take Iceman out then ended my turn.

Turn 6: Kirk added The Nostromo to his resource row. Then he recruited Iceman who froze Miss America. Next Kirk added Call and Parker to his front and sent Iceman to the back.

During the main phase Kirk used Cattle Prod to move Miss America to the back row. He then had Parker and Call team attack Sister Grimm and both Call and Grimm were stunned. For Kirk’s last attack, Sister Ripley knocked She-Hulk out of the game.

I added a card face down as my sixth resource and recruited Pixie and Singularity. I sent everyone to the front row then went to my main phase. I activated Pixie’s Hallucinogenic Dust to find Thanos who entered the front row as well.

After this I had Sister Grimm and Singularity make a team attack on Parker and got the knockout. Then I gave a Caffeine Injection to Thanos and sent him into combat with Sister Ripley who was equipped with a Power Loader. Thanos got the stun which sent the power loader to the discard pile and added a wound to Sister Ripley. Pixie then made a final attack on Iceman getting the knockout. After all this fun I sent everyone I could the Pocket Dimension ending my turn.

Turn 7: Kirk laid a Weylan-Yutani Complex into his resource row and had no one to recruit. Next he had Call and Sister Ripley team attack Singularity but I played Find Cover to avoid getting stunned. Call was stunned for a second wound from the strike back and Kirk ended his turn.

I laid a card face down for my seventh resource and recruited Ghost Rider. He gave his Penance Stare to Sister Ripley for three -1-1 counters and went to the front row while Sister Grimm headed to the back row. Next I had Thanos attack Sister Ripley for an easy stun.

After combat I activated Hallucinogenic Dust once more to add M.O.D.O.K. to my back row.

With nothing else to be done I sent everyone into the Pocket Dimension for the end of my turn.

Turn 8: Kirk started his turn off by adding an Avenger’s Mansion to his resources. Bishop was his lone recruit and he went to the front row. He then had his entire squad team attack Singularity and got the knockout.

 

I struck back on Call before I sent Singularity to the discard and returned my characters from the Pocket Dimension. Ghost Rider gave his stare to Bishop for a stun and Kirk’s turn was ended.

I chose not to add a resource and just recruited another copy of Singularity to my front row. Then I activated Hallucinogenic Dust to find Corporal Hicks and added him to the back row. Next I had Thanos attack Sister Ripley but Kirk activated Sacrifice and Resurrection to cancel the combat and replace his main character with Ripley 8’s level two and place her face down into his back row. I had no more attacks so I just let Corporal Hicks add two +1+1 counters to all of my ready characters with Stay Frosty before I sent any of my characters to the Pocket Dimension.

Turn 10: Kirk added an Earth to his resources and recruited Dr. Strange to his front row. During his main phase Kirk activated Acidic Blood to put six -1-1 counters on both Sister Ripley and Singularity. Singularity was not stunned because she was sporting two +1+1 counters from Corporal Hicks. Kirk then used Transmute to make the -1-1 counters on Ripley 8 into +1+1 counters making her an 11/13. He then had Dr. Strange attack Singularity for the knockout.

On his return from the Pocket Dimension, Ghost Rider would give four -1-1 counters to Sister Ripley to bring her back down to a 7/9. I set my formation and then Kirk activated I’m Sorry on Thanos forcing me to put all of my copies of Thanos that weren’t already in my resource row into the discard pile.

Kirk had no more profitable attacks left and ended his turn.

I added an Arcadia to the the resource row and recruited Loki to the back row. During my main phase I discarded M.O.D.O.K. to power up the copy I had in play and drew three cards from Power Hungry. I then had Ghost Rider attack Dr. Strange for a knockout. Next I had Corporal Hicks make a ranged attack on Ripley 8 and got the stun. Finally I had Miss America attack Bishop and got the stun there as well.

After that I just let Corporal Hicks Stay Frosty and added two more +1+1 counters to all of my ready characters during the end of my turn.

Turn 11: Kirk drew his two cards and decided that was the end of it and named Sister Grimm the victor.

We have one more match up left in the Crazy 8 and it’s between two power houses of the Marvel Universe. Number one seed Dark Phoenix will be taking on number eight seed Professor X in the next installment of our Salt 16 see you there!
